ABOUT ME
Prof. Dr. Selçuk NAS was born in 1968 in Balıkesir, Türkiye. He completed his primary, secondary, and high school education in İzmir and graduated from İzmir Çınarlı Anatolian Technical and Vocational High School in 1987. In 1991, he earned his bachelor’s degree from Istanbul Technical University, Faculty of Maritime, Deck Department, with the title of Ocean-Going Deck Officer.
He served as an ocean-going watch officer and chief officer on merchant vessels operated by D.B. Deniz Nakliyatı T.A.Ş. and Dünya Denizcilik Co. In 1995, he began his academic career as a Lecturer at Dokuz Eylül University, Faculty of Maritime, Deck Department, where he continues to serve.
He completed his master’s degree in 1999 and his Ph.D. in 2006 in the Department of Maritime Business Management at Dokuz Eylül University. In 2011, he received the title of Associate Professor in the field of Management and Organization.
Between 1996–2001, he served as Vice Head of the Deck Department; from 2001–2009, he held the position of Vice Director of the Maritime School; and from 2009–2016, he served as Vice Dean of the Faculty of Maritime. As of November 15, 2016, he has been appointed as a Professor in the Department of Maritime Education.
Prof. NAS has numerous national and international publications. His research areas include seafarer education, employment and working conditions, simulator-based maritime training management, shipmasters’ decision-making processes, ship maneuvering risk assessment in ports, simulator-based port modeling, artificial intelligence modeling for ship maneuvering, and navigation and mooring modeling for LNG terminals within ship–shore interaction frameworks.
Within the scope of university–industry collaboration, he has provided consultancy services to Uzmar, Ditaş, Gemport Pilotage and Towage Services, Arkas Shipping, AYGAZ Natural Gas, Middle East Antalya Port Management, İstanbul Sea Buses Co., and Ege Gaz Aliağa LNG Terminal.
He was a founding board member of DEPARK – Dokuz Eylül University Technology Development Zone Inc. and continues to serve as a researcher, consultant, and project manager in national and international projects on port modeling, coastal facility design, navigation engineering, and marine traffic engineering.
Between 2017–2019, he established a technology company named Margen Teknoloji, which developed and commercialized artificial intelligence–based simulators — one of the first Industry 4.0 innovations in the maritime industry.
Since 2014, he has been serving as the Editor-in-Chief of the peer-reviewed academic journal Journal of ETA Maritime Science, indexed in international databases. He also served as a Board Member of the Chamber of Marine Engineers (GMO) between 2013–2022 and has been a Board Member of the Association for the Evaluation and Accreditation of Maritime Education Programs (DEDEK) since 2020.
Prof. Dr. Selçuk NAS is married to Mrs. Esra NAS and is the father of two children.
